How I Earned My First $100 as a Freelance Writer (Make Money Online)

“You don’t need to be a professional writer. You just need to be consistent and clear.”

Hey friend — if you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been wondering:
Can I really make money online without any technical skills?

Short answer: YES.
Longer answer: Yes, but you need to start the right way.

Let me tell you the story of how I made my very first $100 online — not with crypto, not with selling courses — but with simple freelance writing.

And guess what? I didn’t have a journalism degree, I wasn’t a grammar nerd, and I had never written professionally before.

Here’s exactly how I did it — step by step.

🧠 Step 1: I Chose a Topic I Could Write About Without Googling Everything

When I first thought of writing online, I panicked.

“I’m not a writer. What would I even write about?”

But then I asked myself — what do I know about that other people might want content on?

I had just started working remotely during COVID. So, I thought:
“Why not write about remote work, productivity, and freelancing?”

I picked a niche: Remote Work Lifestyle.

No rocket science. Just stuff I had lived.

🔑 Tip: You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to be 1 step ahead of the reader.

🧰 Step 2: I Signed Up on Freelancing Platforms (Fiverr, Upwork & Others)

I didn’t pay for anything. I just created profiles on:

I used a friendly profile picture, wrote a short intro:

“Hey! I’m a freelance content writer who writes clear, helpful articles for blogs and websites. I focus on remote work, lifestyle, productivity, and tech. I may be new here, but I write like I’m talking to a friend — and that’s what readers love.”

No lies. No exaggeration. Just honesty.

🟡 Reality Check: At first, no one will hire you for $100/blog. That’s okay. You’re building trust.

✍️ Step 3: I Wrote 3 Sample Articles — Just for My Portfolio

No one will hire you if you say, “I can write” — they want to see it.

So, I opened Google Docs and wrote 3 short articles (500–700 words each):

  1. “5 Productivity Tips for Remote Workers”
  2. “How to Create a Budget Home Office Setup”
  3. “Best Free Tools for Online Collaboration”

I didn’t copy from Google. I wrote what I had personally used.

Then I made the docs “Anyone with the link can view” and added them to my profile as my sample work.

📬 Step 4: I Started Sending Daily Proposals on Upwork

Upwork gives you a few free ‘connects’ (credits to apply for jobs). I searched for:

  • “Blog writer”
  • “Content writer beginner”
  • “Lifestyle blog post”

Then I sent 6–8 proposals a day.

My message looked like this:

Hi [Client’s Name],

I saw your listing for a blog post about remote work tips. That’s right up my alley — I’ve written similar content before. I’ve attached a sample article below.

I’m new to Upwork, so I’m offering a friendly beginner rate of $20 for 700 words. I’ll make sure the post is clear, engaging, and delivered early.

Hope to hear from you soon!

I didn’t copy-paste the same thing. I tweaked it for each job.

💥 And on Day 3, I got my first reply.

🤑 Step 5: I Got My First Order — $25 for a 600-Word Article

The client asked me to write:

“How to Create a Productive Morning Routine for Remote Workers”

I was SO nervous… but I gave myself 3 hours.
Wrote from the heart. Used Grammarly and Hemingway App to clean it up.

I sent it. Waited. And then…

🟢 “Great work! This is exactly what I needed. Sending payment now.”

I made my first $25 online. 🥹

⭐ Step 6: I Asked for a Review + Got Repeat Work

Before the job ended, I messaged:

“If you’re happy with the article, I’d be grateful if you could leave a short review on my profile. It’ll help me grow here.”

The client left a 5-star review.

He even came back later asking me to write two more blog posts — for $30 and $45.

🎉 Boom — $100 earned in my first month of writing.

🧭 What I Learned (So You Don’t Have to Make My Mistakes)

  • Don’t try to be fancy. Clear, simple writing wins.
  • Don’t wait to be ‘ready.’ Just start with what you know.
  • Don’t pitch once. Pitch 5–10 clients every day.
  • Don’t write for pennies forever. Once you have 3–5 jobs done, raise your rate.
